Enjoy Subversive Filipino Cuisine at Restaurante Pia Y Damaso

There’s an interesting restaurant at the 2nd level of Greenbelt 5 that offers mouth-watering Filipino cuisine with a twist of Spanish cuisine – the Restaurante Pia Y Damaso.

Restaurante Pia Y Damaso is one of  the first restaurants which opened in Greenbelt 5. Its name was derived from two of the characters in Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere: Pia, wife of Kapitan Tiyago, and Padre Damaso. The resto is located near the main entrance of the mall opposite Ayala Museum.  The interior and exterior showcase with an eye-catching designs based on the old style during the Spanish era.  It’s also adorned with amazing paintings and elegant chairs and tables.

Recently Pinoy Manila was invited to taste the good food offered by Restaurante Pia Y Damaso. The restaurant served a lot of sumptuous dishes from fresh green salad, overwhelming main course to delicious desert.

“Elias” is probably the most intriguing dish in Restaurante Pia Y Damaso. It has seared marinated crocodile from Davao, mixed greens, tomato, caramelized pineapple, crisp pineapple and mango cilantro vinaigrette. You read it right! It has a crocodile meat. Well, its taste is just like a fried chicken meat (not that tasteful like the regular chicken meat).

Kapitan Tiago’s Kare Kare

What I recommend is the Kapitan Tiago’s Kare Kare. The taste is really superb! It has a native stew with roasted rice, peanuts and garlic with beef tripe, tail and meat served with bagoong shrimp paste. Definitely, you will ask for more rice if your taste their Kare-Kare.

Nga Nga Beef Salad

For health conscious or on a diet, try the Nga Nga Beef Salad. The way you eat this salad is somehow the way Koreans eat the ssam wrap. You need to wrap the beef flakes, green mango, pickles, onions, haw flakes, cilantro, arugula into a fresh lettuce. The mixtures of all ingredients gives a sweet and sour taste.

If want to know the taste of an Ostrich meat, order the Ostrich beef steak with guava butter. No need to go out of town coz the resto has special menu for Ostrich.  It has a thick seared ostrich steak, marinated tagalog beefstock style with soya sauce, onions, native lemon (calamansi), black pepper, with fried saba bananas, sauteed cabbage and onions. The taste is just like the beef meat.

Ode to Heidelberg

I must say the Ode to Heidelberg has the biggest serving they prepared on the table. It’s really overwhelming. It’s a German dish of boiled smoked pork hock, bacon, four kinds of sausages and potatoes. I’m not sure how they cook this dish, the meat is very tender. This is really good “pulutan” in a drinking session.

Other dishes include Pork Belly with Chorizo and Chickpeas, Smoked BBQ Mango Pork, Smoked Tapang Usa, Roast Chicken with Sherry and Pimiento, Almond stuffed dates wrapped in bacon, Filo tarts with pork asado and apple relish, Creamy Tinapa Asparagus and Fish Fillet, Kua Pao Pan De Sal , and other delicious Pinoy dishes.

How to get to Greenbelt

When it comes to desert, take the Brazo ni Dona Vicki, De Espadana Quezo de Bola Cheesecake, Toasted Ensaymada with Queso de bola and Tsokolate Eh Belgian chocolate, Toasted Yema Parfait, Sisa’s Dementia, and Pepay the dancer’s halo halo. I also recommend the Bibingka Waffle. It has Malago’s goat’s cheese, quezo de bola, salted egg and coco jam.

If you’re craving a Filipino cuisine with a different twist, don’t forget you include on your bucket list the Restaurante Pia Y Damaso in Greenbelt 5.  Each dish is worth every penny.  The place is also cozy and quiet where you can hold a meet ups, business meeting or just chit chat with your family, friends, colleagues, and loved one.

Note: Please make an early reservation to have sure seats in Restaurante Pia Y Damaso. The resto can accommodate around 30-40 pax.
