Makeup Ideas for Beginners that Make You Look Like a Pro

It’s difficult to keep up with the latest makeup trends, especially if you’re only just beginning to develop an interest in cosmetics. However, there’s no reason for you not to be more adventurous with your makeup choices, even if you consider yourself a beauty newbie.

Here are some makeup looks that you should try. They might seem complicated or too daring, but trust us — you can definitely pull these off.

Ombre Lipstick

There are many ways you can achieve an ombre lipstick look, like using a combination of concealer, dark lip liner, and light-colored lipstick. Some even use glittery eyeshadow for a more dimensional look. However, all those careful steps need some getting used to; what’s more, touch ups can become quite complicated when you’re on the go.

The solution for two-tone lips in a snap? Get a two-tone lipstick! Korean brand Laneige has a range of two-tone lipsticks, from classic nude shades to rosy pinks to daring reds. Just a few swipes and you’ve got lips that look like you spent hours on them. Top it off with clear lip gloss to complete the look.

Bright and Bold Lipstick

You can never go wrong with red lipstick, no matter your skin tone. However, red shouldn’t be the only bold lip color you should try. Dark blues and violets work wonders in making a bold statement. If you’re still a bit hesitant, stick to the red family by choosing maroon or deep wine shades. The 2016 Pantone Color of the Year, Marsala, is also a good entry point for bolder lip colors. Once you’ve warmed up to it, it’s time to bust out the richer, darker hues like plum, cherry, coffee, chocolate, dark green, and black.

Brightly Colored Eyeliner

You don’t have to stick with blacks and browns for your eyeliner. Go for bright ones, like electric blue, forest green, or sunshine yellow to really make your eyes pop. White eyeliner is a useful blending and highlighting tool, but on its own and applied carefully on your lower waterline, it can give the illusion of bigger, more open eyes. And you don’t have to apply eyeliner only on the top and bottom lash lines, too. Explore your options like dabbing just a bit of golden eyeliner to the inner corners of your eyes.

Shimmery Daytime Eyeshadow

Who says shimmery eyes are just for the nighttime? While you should definitely shy away from to much glitter during the day, you can still rock some sparkle while the sun is up. Opt for peachy coral shades, light pinks, and muted purples for a touch of shimmer and color. Gold and shiny browns and yellows are also good choices when you want to go for a bright, sun-kissed look. You can also use a tiny bit of white or pearl eye shadow to add some highlights and brighten up your eyes even more.

Dark Eyes and Dark Lips

There’s an old beauty rule that says you can’t have bold eyes and bold lips at the same time — but this rule is made to be broken. Just be aware of the colors that work together so your makeup doesn’t overwhelm your face and your own beauty can still shine through.

The easiest way to play up both your lips and eyes? Swipe some red or purplish lipstick in the likes of burgundy or dark grape-like shades and pair it with brown, bronze, or taupe smokey eyes. Keep your cheeks simple with a pink or brown blush.

Bright Smokey Eyes

Speaking of smokey eyes, it’s easy to fall into the routine of going with the traditional colors like black, gray, brown, and bronze (or peach if you want a little more color). These are classics, no-fail looks after all. But once you’ve mastered how to apply the smokey eye, you should definitely try them in various colors.

Blue and purple are the first shades that come to mind, but if you’re looking for more adventure, you can try orange, yellow, or even neon green. For an interesting gradient, combine matte and shimmer using a monochromatic palette. You can also use widely contrasting shades — say violet and green — for a truly bold look.

Applying makeup is like any other skill — just keep on practicing and you’ll master even the most complicated techniques. But while you’re still practicing, it’s also good to go beyond the classic looks and colors to build up your confidence on your way to becoming a pro.
