Guillermo Del Toro’s Mama is the first horror film that I watched for 2013. It is a supernatural horror film that tells the haunting tale of two girls- Victoria and Lily, who disappeared into the woods. Five years later, their uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain) found the two girls with animal-like in behavior.
Lucas and Annabel decided to live in a welfare clinic for the custody claim of Victoria and Lily. Dr. Gerald Dreyfuss who studied the two girls found a mysterious character they call “Mama”, whom they talk to and play with. One night Lucas was attacked Mama and falls off the staircase, losing consciousness and sliding into a comatose state.
Annabel take care Victoria and Lily. As day goes by, Victoria somehow shows her good feeling to Annabel while Lily still acts different.
Meanwhile, Dr. Dreyfuss is attacked and killed by Mama after visiting the cabin to research.
On the other hand, Annabel learns that Edith (a mental asylum inmate in the 19th century) and Mama are the same person. The lady had committed suicide by jumping off a cliff after stealing her baby from the nuns. Mama never knew what happened to the child and has been searching for her; she sees Victoria and Lilly as substitutes. One night, Mama escaped with the girls.
After Lucas regains consciousness, he and Annabel rescued Victoria and Lily in the cabin. The couple spot the children on a nearby cliff, where Mama is preparing to relive her suicide by taking Victoria and Lilly with her over the cliff. Lilly comes with the Mama while Victoria decides to stay with Annabel and Lucas.
Honestly, upon entering the cinema, I’m a bit afraid on the movie. I don’t know why but I’m really scared on ghost. One of my friends told me that he already watched this film and it’s really scary. Somehow, YES. he’s correct..its’ really scary you’ll definitely move on your chair when you see those scenes where Mama is suddenly appears on the screen.
The two beautiful girls did a great acting. For a very young age, they can justify their role. Liliy is my favorite character on the film. Her facial expressions portrays a good acting.
On the other hand, Jessica justified the role of a rock star girl. I really like her attitude on the film. With her angst and look, she’s definitely the right person for this role.
I don’t see any special on the acting of Nikolaj. Actually my focus is just on the two girls.
Mama is great a horror film but somehow I’m looking for more special effects specially on the sound effects. Over all, this film is recommended for all the movie goers who love thriller. The movie was creepy and worth watching.
