Get Sporty – Retro, Seaside Style
This season, that perennial nautical theme at the heart of Sperry Top-Sider’s DNA, captures America’s sporty take on retro seaside style. There’s a more playful approach to yachting and leisure as it is mixed with preppy Ivy League styling. It’s all about the classic nautical palette. Tri-tone combinations look fresh on the key items of the season.
It seems like many designers are inspired by the nautical theme and this season Is no different. A few took on the idea with a casual approach, like mixing striped jackets with denim shorts while others offered more sophisticated, polished looks in maxi skirts and belted jackets. The freshness came from the Sporty influence of the season mixed with marine styling. Stripes continue to be a key print story for designers.
Vacationland – Retro Vibe
Hop on the holiday highway and take a trip back in time for a retro vacation. Sperry Top-Sider Vacationland takes us back to the heydays of mid-century Miami and Palm Springs. Resort kitsch of the 50s and 60s inspires a playful palette of turquoise and orange colors grounded with neutrals.
Many designers have captured the retro vibe of the season in their collections. There was a sense of whimsy with all the conversational prints like 50s cars, palm trees and tropical scenes, which conjured up daydreams of worry-free holidays. Mid-century silhouettes were also important; sleeveless tunics over cropped flared pants and bold printed mini dresses were outdone by skimpy stomach-baring bandeau tops with flirty skirts in the season’s key brights.
White Sands – Simplistic and Clean
Sperry Top-Sider’s White Sands speaks of a more simplistic and clean mood. The season’s menswear is influenced by Jay Gatsby’s fresh and sophisticated style in the upcoming glossy remake of The Great Gatsby. Clean white rules the color range and it is often mixed with tan and cognac for a casual lux appeal. Light and airy, this trend captures the free spirit in all of us waiting to come out of winter’s snowy gloom.
The minimalist sport vibe was ever present on the Spring runways. Fabrics were clean and crisp while offering plenty of opportunities for layering with lovely transparent fabrics and ensembles. White is a key color for the season, and looks just right when mixed with all the pretty pastels. Overall there is a light, free and simplistic approach to dressing that feels very renewed.
