Moriones Festival is annual religious festival held on Holy Week in the province of Marinduque, which is set to happen on April 13 – 20, 2014.
Moriones Festival is one of the Philippines colourful festivals featuring men and women in costumes and masks replicating the garb of biblical Roman soldiers. Participants who join of the event is called Moriones or Moryonan. They are wearing “Morion” which means mask” or “visor,” to cover their face while engaging other people.
One of the highlights of this festival is called Via Crucis held every Good Friday. It is a re-enactment of the suffering of Christ on his way to the calvary. It is also re-enacts the story of Saint Longinus, a Roman centurion who was blind in one eye. There are devotees of this event inflict suffering upon themselves by whipping their backs, carrying a wooden cross and sometimes even crucifixion.
The festival is held is specifically in different towns of Marinduque such as Sta. Cruz, Buenavista, Torrijos, Gasan, Boac and Mogpog.
